The last few years have shown us that French Tech is a rapidly expanding field. Indeed, more and more start-ups are growing and achieving significant valuations, enabling them to join the coveted category of unicorns. Today, we zoom in on today's most highly-valued French unicorns.

What is a unicorn?

First of all, it's worth reminding ourselves what unicorns are.

Forget mystical creatures: the term "unicorn" was coined in 2013, and it refers to start-ups valued at at least $1 billion. Typically, these are promising, fast-growing companies that have achieved a high market value in a very short space of time.

Unicorns are mostly start-ups focused on the technology technologies and services that offer innovative products or innovative in their fields.

back market logoWho hasn't heard of Back Market? Present on the web since 2014, the e-commerce startup has been a unicorn since May 2019, following a fundraising of 276 million of euros.

The company specializes in the sale and resale of electronic devices and accessories of all brands, reconditioned and at affordable prices.

This has earned it the title of "positive impact" start-up.

Today, it is valued at 5.8 billion and ranks second among France's 10 most valuable unicorns.

3. ContentSquare, for improved business performance 

Content Square logo French start-up ContentSquare was founded in 2012. It is a software company that offers solutions for user experience and conversion management for companies.

In other words, ContentSquare is a tool that analyzes consumer behavior to enable companies to better understand them, and thus improve their sales performance and increase their conversion rates.

The start-up achieved unicorn status in May 2021, and is one of the start-ups with French Tech's biggest fund-raisers.. In particular, it raised 408 million euros in Series E, followed by 587 million euros from two different investors.

Today, ContentSquare is valued at $5.6 billion.

4. Qonto, the innovative neobank 

Qonto logoIn fourth place, we find Qonto, which was elected Best French Fintech in 2019.

This platform is a payroll management software for businesses (VSEs, SMEs, associations, freelancers and start-ups).

It offers tools such as bank accounts, Mastercard debit cards and everything needed to optimize financial management, all 100% digital.

It also facilitates accounting tasks and helps you keep an eye on the state of your finances. The software currently has over 400,000 users, including more than 17,000 companies.

Qonto was granted unicorn status in January 2022, and is now one of the French unicorns with the highest valuations, at 5 billion dollars.

5. Sorare, the game for soccer fans 

Sorare was founded in 2019 and reached unicorn status in September 2021.

It's a gaming platform using Blockchaintechnology, enabling soccer fans to collect, manage and exchange virtual soccer teams with digital cards.

Sorare logoThese allow players to take part in fantasy soccer tournaments and simulation games. Cards can be bought, traded and sold on the Sorare market. The young start-up counts among its main investors two big names in soccer, Kylian Mbappé and Antoine Griezmann.

Sorare currently ranks fifth among France's best-valued unicorns, at 4.6 billion of dollars. The company also recently raised an impressive 580 million euros.

6. Mirakl, the marketplace solution 

Mirakl logoMirakl is a French company based in Paris and founded in 2011. It's a marketplace software which was created to offer companies the opportunity to launch, configure and manage online marketplaces. 

Thanks to this solution, they can create merchant websites, develop mobile applications and set up marketplace functionalities to sell products and services directly to consumers.

The start-up boasts almost 2,000 users, and is set to become a unicorn in September 2021. Following a 300 million and is now valued at 3.5 billion of dollars.

7. Veepee, e-commerce for bargains 

veepee logo Next in the ranking is Veepee, a popular e-commerce start-up specializing in the sale of discounted products.

Originally called Vente-Privée, the company was founded in 2001 and changed its name in 2019. It is an online platform for the sale of discounted items such as clothing, travel, electronics, homeware and food.

The company works with almost 7,000 different brands, and new special offers appear on the website every day.

In figures, Veepee is valued at 3 billion of dollars. The start-up has enjoyed unicorn status since July 2007.

8. ManoMano, the online DIY equipment specialist 

ManoMano logoSince 2013, ManoMano has been an e-commerce site that enables consumers tobuy DIY items for the home and garden.

The platform offers a wide variety of products such as tools, gardening building materials and electronics.

It's a digital alternative to department stores such as Castorama, Mr Bricolage and Leroy Merlin.

The site now boasts over 13 million members.

ManoMano has been a unicorn since July 2021 and is valued at 2.6 billion of dollars. The company's directors have also announced their intention to invest the funds raised to accelerate growth in France and Europe, as well as to develop its product and service offering.

9. Payfit, the virtual assistant for payroll management 

Payfit logoPayfit was founded in 2015 and achieved unicorn status in January 2022. It is a payroll software which enables small and medium-sized businesses to manage and implement their payroll processes more simply and efficiently.

The platform also offers HR solutions solutions, providing access to a wide range of functions for companies, such as drawing up pay slips, managing social security contributions, managing leave and absences, tracking employee working hours and managing expense accounts.

Payfit also offers its users assistance in case of need, as well as comprehensive support tailored to each individual's needs. The start-up has also developed a mobile application to enable each worker to consult their personal data and track their pay slips.

If Payfit ranks ninth in the top 10 French unicorns by valuation, it's thanks to the 254 million euros it has raised, making it worth 2 billion in value.

10. BlaBlaCar, the car-sharing app 

Blablacar logoBlaBlaCar, famous carpooling website and mobile applicationcloses the top 10 French unicorns by valuation. The start-up has been in existence since 2006 and achieved unicorn status 9 years later, in 2015.

The platform connects drivers who post carpooling offers with passengers who need to travel, in order to share a common journey.

On the app and website, you'll find a multitude of routes spanning 18 different countries. There's something for every need and every budget, in the city as well as in the provinces. 

In 2019, the company diversifies its activities and acquires OuiBuswhich will later be renamed BlaBlaBus.

Following a 115 million BlaBlacar is now valued at 2 billion valuation.
